  • When Lao people traditionally greet each other it is not by a handshake, but by a ‘nop’. A nop is a prayer-like greeting where your hands are placed with your palms together and your head is tilted a little forward to the hands. If someone nops you, you are supposed to nop them back. See picture from below.
  • Normally you nop your elders. You don’t have to nop people your age or younger although younger ones might nop you as a sign of respect.
