Wat Phu Champasak, or Wat Phu, is a famous World Heritage site. Originally it was a religious complex similar to other Cambodian compounds such as Angkor Wat. Today the compound has deteriorated into ruins, yet is still used for religious purposes. I have personally been lucky enough to experience this beautiful place.
When I traveling to Wat Phu I was at first expecting to be underwhelmed. But surprisingly I found that, once I was there the entire complex truly had a life of its own. You can immediately sense that Wat Phu is something much greater than an old ruin when you approach it. It is a huge complex that starts at the bottom of a great hill. As you begin walking through at the foot of the hill you are greeted with the largest ruins, including the one from the picture that I've attached.
As I walked from the foot of the hill up to the top, I recall taking a break every now and then to rest a bit since the weather was pretty hot. During those times resting they revealed some of the best moments of the trip. I got the chance to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery you may ever see - truly breathtaking, and very spiritual. It is almost as if soaking up the view energizes you and gives you that extra push to continue your climb up the hill.
During the climb and at the top, you are greeted with so many beautiful sights. It was a refreshingly quiet, peaceful journey that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
