The Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang is a very unique expanse of land littered with hundreds of enormous stone jars. These jars vary in weight from hundreds of kilograms to nearly a tonne.

Mystery and legacy abound when trying to learn when and where the jars originated. Being crafted from solid stone it has been difficult for archaeologists to date them.

The Plain of Jars, like much of Xieng Khuang, is a mysterious and enigmatic destination. It is a great place that both less adventerous folks and backpackers alike should add to their travel itineraries.

Interesting Facts

There were once many more jars

However thieves have stolen many of the smaller ones. The largest mostly fully remain but there still are many small ones to view and enjoy.

A Purpose Unknown

Theories abound about the purpose of the jars, from wine and alcohol fermentation, to rice storage, to even burial sites - but no one truly knows what their original purpose was.
